As I step out of my room, the heat embraces me. That overwhelming feeling of another hot day, when it will be impossible to escape the searing sun. But wait; isn’t it a little bit cooler today? Didn’t I just feel a breeze that wasn’t there yesterday? I step down the stairs and stop at the first landing.

 

There is no view. The foliage of the green trees hides the source of the noise from Mathura road, the sounds that accompany my sleep. Muffled traffic noise, at times. An ongoing roar most of the time. The trees are like a curtain, drawn, but unable to shut out the world behind.

Spice Market, Old Delhi

The first time I visited Old Delhi, I left with a return ticket in my mind. Some places definitely call for a revisit.  And I felt this urgent need to describe Old Delhi to everybody I knew back home. But how can you describe the busy Chandni Chowk lined with scruffy labourers and their carts, waiting for work. The intensive traffic in a steady flow through Old Delhi’s main artery, full of honking horns that drown out all speech.

I was standing in the middle lane of Khan Market trying to remember where I’d seen the Amici restaurant. I had been passing by less than half an hour earlier, but I wasn’t able to retrace my steps. I had decided to leave off the search and ask somebody, but not just anybody, when I saw a young woman approaching. I let her come near me before I politely asked her if she knew the whereabouts of Amici. I wasn’t really able to follow her left and right turns, she must have noticed and said; Oh come on I will walk you there.
